Documenting Accommodations (and differentiation) for ALL students
A special education teacher and an English Language Learner teacher will lead you in a session that will provide you with a valuable resource to document the accommodations that you do with students that have disabilities, English Language Learners, students that are at-risk or students that you just had to do some differentiating for. We will discuss the age old questions, "How do I grade the Apple with all my Oranges." There are times that we as teachers put a lot more of ourselves (when supporting students learning) into an assignment or task than we can show in a simple letter grade. Parents need to know there was more involved in getting the final outcome - I will share with you several ways to convey that information. This is a time proven, teacher, parent and administrative supported method that we have used at our school for over 10 years! It is also a hot commodity on Teachers Pay Teachers.

The Old Dog has some new tricks

I've taught US History for 26 years, first at John Carroll HS, then here at Spain Park High School (since it opened in 2001).

Last year I started using Blended Learning in my classroom and it has changed the way I teach. Not only have the grades have gone up considerably, the student interest level is much higher than I have seen in years! With just a little work on your part, your students can have higher grades and be excited again about your subject.

When I first started looking into Blended Learning, it was centered around math and science education, but it is something you can adapt to any subject taught in middle or high school. In my session, I will show you how easy it is to set up! I will share some really good resources with you as well as have examples you can view all year..

Why Can't We Be Friends? Engaging Parents in Meaningful & Productive Communication
Research shows that engaging parents or guardians in problem--solving is the number one way to change a student's problem behaviors. So, why do educators dread making parent phone calls or requesting conferences? Educators must feel confidently prepared for these communications with parents, and the purpose of this session is to do exactly that! This session focuses on specific techniques, phrases, scripts, and responses educators can use when speaking with and meeting with parents. Additionally, the session will highlight common mistakes that made by well-meaning teachers which may stifle parent communication, and offer ideas about how to communicate more effectively and efficiently. This session is ideal for newer teachers, and also veteran teachers who would like new ideas about how to engage parents in a meaningful and productive way.

IXL: What It Is and How to Use It Effectively
158cis17-599

IXL is one of my very favorite tech tools and an integral part of how I teach grammar. It provides invaluable opportunities for students who are genuinely interested in succeeding, and, just as important, it provides much needed accountability for students who are not making a good-faith effort to learn. In this session, I’ll talk about how I use IXL (and walk participants through the very easy technical aspects of the program), we’ll discuss potential pitfalls if the program is used incorrectly, and we’ll brainstorm to identify other effective classroom uses for this tool.

Istation - Reading
Isation is a student-driven instructional program designed to meet the individual learning needs of a child. Students begin the program with Istation’s Indicators of Progress (ISIP). ISIP measures the child’s current level of performance in reading. Teachers are then provided with a variety of academic lessons tailored to meet the specific learning needs and academic goals of each student. Students are assessed the beginning of each month or on teacher demand. Student data is broken down into the following categories: summary reports, skill growth reports, and Tier movement reports. This data is made available to teachers and guardians.

Where Is My Life Jacket? Navigating the Hurricane Waters of Student Data to Find What I Need
This session will help teachers identify and read reports to assist with goal setting, curriculum development, targeted strategy lessons, and individual remediation. The session is designed for new teachers who need to learn it all, or for those who are not comfortable with the various reports available to them through Scantron and just need a refresher. A great session to practice finding and utilizing reports to access data you need to help be effective under RTI.

Pragmatic Poetry
Project-based learning shifts the emphasis from teacher-centered to student-centered, making learning more relevant. Unit-culminating multimedia poetry projects, allow students to use their knowledge of poetic devices, figurative language, mood, tone, and theme to create presentations that reflect their unique creativity through the use of multimedia technology in the research, planning and presentation of projects.

We developed the idea for these projects by examining how some advertisers are currently utilizing poetry in TV commercials. Our students were given the choice to develop either a commercial, PSA, or identity video that sold an idea, encouraged a positive character trait, or highlighted personal qualities of the unique individual. The projects had to reflect the proper use of tone, project a central theme, and incorporate the use of video, images, music, poetry, and voice-over to "sell" their ideas.

There are numerous ELA Standards that align with this multimedia project: RL 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 10
SL 1, 2, 4, 5, 6
L 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6
W 4, 5, 6, 7, 9, 10
