What's all the hype about Design Thinking?! Come and hear how Jeff and Sara have used this process with students in order to generate conversation, questions, and solution. The process begins with the "premise of tapping into student curiosity and allowing them to create, test and re-create until they eventually present what they made to a real audience" (Spencer, 2016).

Genius Hour in Elementary
In this session, I would introduce the idea of Genius Hour in the younger grades (K-5). Genius hour is a movement that allows students to explore their own passions and encourages creativity in the classroom. It provides students a choice in what they learn during a set period of time during school. I piloted 'Genius Hour' last year with my 2nd grade class at Bluff Park and this year all of 2nd grade and 4th grade class will be participating at Bluff Park. I will give a multitude of resources and ideas for making the big ideas of 'Genius Hour' seem manageable. I will walk through the process, give examples, and many helpful hits along the way. Genius Hour has made a lasting impact on my students and our school as a whole. My hope is that this idea will make its way to all elementary schools in Hoover and therefore will benefit all our students in the district. For more information, view the quick video of Genius Hour from my students last year: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DLxVeoRiNWU

Documenting Accommodations (and differentiation) for ALL students
A special education teacher and an English Language Learner teacher will lead you in a session that will provide you with a valuable resource to document the accommodations that you do with students that have disabilities, English Language Learners, students that are at-risk or students that you just had to do some differentiating for. We will discuss the age old questions, "How do I grade the Apple with all my Oranges." There are times that we as teachers put a lot more of ourselves (when supporting students learning) into an assignment or task than we can show in a simple letter grade. Parents need to know there was more involved in getting the final outcome - I will share with you several ways to convey that information. This is a time proven, teacher, parent and administrative supported method that we have used at our school for over 10 years! It is also a hot commodity on Teachers Pay Teachers.

How to Become a Google Certified Teacher!
Yes, you are a great user of the Google Suite for Education (Docs, Classroom, Sheets, Gmail, etc) so why not become an Official Google Certified Educator through their certification program! With a bit of training and practice using the skills you ALREADY have, you can become a "Certified Level 1 Educator!" It's a great credential to have and will open lots of the "Google" doors related to their amazing PD. because most of what they offer is only available to Google Certified teachers. We will look at the program, spend some time working on their training, learn about the exam* and help you make a plan to get CERTIFIED! This is open to all teachers, all grade levels and will serve as a great way to prove your proficiency with Google tools in the classroom. Right now, HCS only has a handful of Certified Educators so let's raise that number! The exam fee is $10, which we will discuss.

The Old Dog has some new tricks

I've taught US History for 26 years, first at John Carroll HS, then here at Spain Park High School (since it opened in 2001).

Last year I started using Blended Learning in my classroom and it has changed the way I teach. Not only have the grades have gone up considerably, the student interest level is much higher than I have seen in years! With just a little work on your part, your students can have higher grades and be excited again about your subject.

When I first started looking into Blended Learning, it was centered around math and science education, but it is something you can adapt to any subject taught in middle or high school. In my session, I will show you how easy it is to set up! I will share some really good resources with you as well as have examples you can view all year..

Why Can't We Be Friends? Engaging Parents in Meaningful & Productive Communication
Research shows that engaging parents or guardians in problem--solving is the number one way to change a student's problem behaviors. So, why do educators dread making parent phone calls or requesting conferences? Educators must feel confidently prepared for these communications with parents, and the purpose of this session is to do exactly that! This session focuses on specific techniques, phrases, scripts, and responses educators can use when speaking with and meeting with parents. Additionally, the session will highlight common mistakes that made by well-meaning teachers which may stifle parent communication, and offer ideas about how to communicate more effectively and efficiently. This session is ideal for newer teachers, and also veteran teachers who would like new ideas about how to engage parents in a meaningful and productive way.

Creating a Cross Curricular Community
Creating a cross curricular community is an integral part of the middle school concept. Students not only learn about a concept in one class, but in each academic discipline. This heightens student learning by seeing a concept from more than one point of view. More so it heightens student engagement because they are learning about a concept through all facets of their school day.

In this session, a middle school team of teachers will demonstrate a true cross curricular unit taught to 7th grade students. Students read a book entitled "Lincoln's Last Days". In each individual classroom, students are taught about Abraham Lincoln relating to actual course standards in each curriculum area and products are placed in an online portfolio. As a culmination activity, students are grouped based on student choice of product and will recreate important scenes from the book during a day-long cross curricular celebration.

Sampling of activities:
- ADI activity answering the guiding question "Why did Abraham Lincoln prematurely age during his presidency?" Students will research different genetic disorders and the effects of stress on aging.
- Exploration into the possible causes of the Civil War
- Research paper about the possible causes of the Civil War in argument form to persuade the reader to agree with student author as to what truly triggered the beginning of the Civil War

Explore how to rearrange our plates and plan interdisciplinary lessons as an individual teacher or as a team to maximize student learning. Incorporate global connections, student choice, and student voice through student engagement project based learning. Participants will leave with ideas and inspiration to develop, and design engaging units, activities, and lessons to meet the needs of all learners. This session is great for individuals or grade level teams. This session will maximize learning and engagement of students.

Students want to know that their work has real-world application and learn better when there are connections across many disciplines. PBL creates learning situations in which students interact with professionals to solve a problem or answer a driving question. Actual pbl examples from a 2nd grade class will be shared with information and resources for any grade level and subject.

Curriculum standards: PBL can cover many standards. It all depends on the driving question and the teacher that designs it.

ISTE Standard 6:Students communicate clearly and express themselves creatively for a variety of purposes using the platforms, tools, styles, formats and digital media appropriate to their goals.
ISTE Standard 7: Students use digital tools to broaden their perspectives and enrich their learning by collaborating with others and working effectively in teams locally and globally.

Everyone Has a Story- Using Digital Storytelling in the Classroom
As teachers, we often find that our students have connection to the curriculum in ways that we often don't realize. In addition, while many millennials posses the ability to use digital media, many of them don't know how to use that media to create usable products for real world applications.

Digital storytelling allows students to make personal connections to content by telling stories and to gain practical skills by telling stories through digital media and then sharing them with parents, other students and the community.

This hands-on session will allow participants to create digital media products through a variety of methods. Please bring a Chromebook/ iPad or other device.

Sharing My Voice: Using Blogging in the Middle School Classroom
If you give students a place to write that they can get excited about-- they are more willing to get their words out and share their voices. Blogging seems to excite them as it is a familiar medium for the technologically savvy student. As a writer, I wanted to show my students a way to showcase their own writing, and also have a way for them to complete writing projects in a medium they are both familiar with and would find more interesting to utilize beyond a Google Doc. We'll look at two projects using Google Sites and find a way to utilize it within your own classroom.

Awaken Your Inner Explorer! Using Google GeoTools in EVERY Classroom-Explore, Connect & Create!
Google offers 3 powerful geotools-Google Earth, Tour Builder & My Maps-that are relevant to every content area, teacher and student! These tools allow for rich, empowering learning experiences that begin with basic exploration and discovery and lead to deep, thoughtful creation and storytelling. Bring your Chromebook & your ideas as we learn how to use these tools and explore the CREATIVE possibilities they bring! We will learn the how-to part together, brainstorm ideas and then you will spend the rest of your time building a lesson that you can use with your students.
The 3 tools we will explore are:
-Tour Builder-Allows for students to tell a story using rich media and language centered around the theme of geography and place. And because this tool is inherently creative, the possibilities for its use by students are deep and wide.
My Maps-It allows for students to create their very own custom maps layered with rich data. This tool is also collaborative so students can work together on the same map. In fact, an entire class could create one map together. Whether they are highlighting local environmental threats or mapping out their journey to a far away land, they can create something that is meaningful and useful beyond themselves.
-New Google Earth for Chromebooks

Creating Graphic Organizers for Reluctant Writers and Emerging Critical Thinkers
Go beyond generic graphic organizers. Create personalized organizers that address the specific needs of your students. Practice converting written questions into visual prompts. These organizers can be used for formative or summative assessments, to prompt small-group or whole-class discussion, or to ascertain individual understanding. They can provide reluctant writers with writing assignments that break down multi-task activities into shorter more manageable segments. In addition, they can help struggling readers remain engaged as they make sense of complex or unfamiliar texts and new concepts.

IXL: What It Is and How to Use It Effectively
158cis17-599

IXL is one of my very favorite tech tools and an integral part of how I teach grammar. It provides invaluable opportunities for students who are genuinely interested in succeeding, and, just as important, it provides much needed accountability for students who are not making a good-faith effort to learn. In this session, I’ll talk about how I use IXL (and walk participants through the very easy technical aspects of the program), we’ll discuss potential pitfalls if the program is used incorrectly, and we’ll brainstorm to identify other effective classroom uses for this tool.

Istation - Reading
Isation is a student-driven instructional program designed to meet the individual learning needs of a child. Students begin the program with Istation’s Indicators of Progress (ISIP). ISIP measures the child’s current level of performance in reading. Teachers are then provided with a variety of academic lessons tailored to meet the specific learning needs and academic goals of each student. Students are assessed the beginning of each month or on teacher demand. Student data is broken down into the following categories: summary reports, skill growth reports, and Tier movement reports. This data is made available to teachers and guardians.

Pragmatic Poetry
Project-based learning shifts the emphasis from teacher-centered to student-centered, making learning more relevant. Unit-culminating multimedia poetry projects, allow students to use their knowledge of poetic devices, figurative language, mood, tone, and theme to create presentations that reflect their unique creativity through the use of multimedia technology in the research, planning and presentation of projects.

We developed the idea for these projects by examining how some advertisers are currently utilizing poetry in TV commercials. Our students were given the choice to develop either a commercial, PSA, or identity video that sold an idea, encouraged a positive character trait, or highlighted personal qualities of the unique individual. The projects had to reflect the proper use of tone, project a central theme, and incorporate the use of video, images, music, poetry, and voice-over to "sell" their ideas.

There are numerous ELA Standards that align with this multimedia project: RL 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 10
SL 1, 2, 4, 5, 6
L 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6
W 4, 5, 6, 7, 9, 10

M.A.D. Projects:Genius Hour w/a Purpose!
Genius Hour is a powerful learning experience that allows students to explore their passions, engage in a powerful learning process and create an authentic, purposeful product...all on their own with the teacher simply acting as a facilitator & guide. BUT for it to go smoothly, there is a definite need for structures and a focus. So in this session, we will explore how to use Genius Hour in a way that gives students the chance to creatively solve real problems that matter to them with the goal of Making A Difference (M.A.D.). This session is modeled on the work that Peter Cameron has done with his students and will unpack some of the experiences that teachers at Simmons Middle School had through their Genius Hours last year.
